But what gives rise to fear? Obviously, the source(s) vary from person to person, but as a psychological professional with almost thirty of clinical experience, there are a few common themes that typically apply (Certainly there are other themes beyond the scope of this article).

Low self-esteem: It is my professional opinion that there is an epidemic of low self-esteem out there ("Esteem" is the way others see us. "Self-esteem" is the way we see ourselves.). Are traders different? Yes. It has been my experience that aspiring traders tend to delude themselves more than the average person that they have high self-esteem. They typically struggle with the same low self-esteem everyone else does. Most important, low self-esteem will never give rise to success in an endeavor as challenging as futures trading.

If I have low self-esteem, it means that I do not value myself highly (hint: look past "arrogance". Arrogance is a cover up for low self-esteem. It is also a function of low self-esteem.). Most of us, as a result of patterns during our formative experiences, have subconsciously defined ourselves as flawed, less than, broken, unlovable, unfixable, unacceptable, etc. Essentially, "I don't matter". This is a VERY painful place to live from!

FEAR often arises out of concern for being "found out for the fraud I know myself to be". Taking a losing trade is fear-filled experience for the novice trader. Missing a move is a fear-filled experience for the novice trader. Why? Does this confirm what the trader's worst fear? That he/she is a loser?! The subconscious logic strikes at the core of our value as an individual!

Socialization: This theme has been traditionally more applicable to men than women, but is more applicable to women today than ever before. As men, we are socialized that our value lies in what we do. At a party, what question does one man ask another man when meeting for the first time? What do you do? If we take a losing trade, have a losing day, or struggle to achieve consistent profitability - it can strike at our very value as a human being through this "value wrapped in performance" channel. On the contrary, the psychologically healthy individual places value in "who I am" not "what I do" or "what I look like" (the traditional female socialization pattern).

Lack of self-coaching skill: How do we tend to fix things that are not working? We figure out what we are doing wrong and tell ourselves not to do that anymore. "Stop being fearful". "Don't be greedy." "Stop exiting when the indicators do 'X'". "That was stupid! Don't do that again!" The list of self-statements that ultimately have no positive impact goes on and on. The average individual is working on the same issues they were last week, last month and last year! In the words of Dr. Phil ... "How's that program working for you?" The Law of Attraction dictates that we get more of what we focus on -- therefore, when we focus on what is not working we get more of what is not working. Does this sound familiar? We should focus on what is working, not what is not working! Self-coaching is an art form that requires significant skill in balancing what is working and what is not working.
